Junior
Sports Team of the Year |
Prestwick
Under 12 Cricket Team |
In
2003 this team won the Western Junior Cricket Union 'A'
U12 league, which encompasses the West of Scotland. They
are a young side, with the majority still eligible in 2004.
They won 11 of their 12 fixtures on the way to winning the
title. They played very well and looked the part in all
facets of the game, which was a testament to all the hard
work they had put in during both the summer & winter
months. It was the first Prestwick side at any level to
win a trophy using players of both genders - there was a
girl in the team, and you can see her at the front in the
photograph above. |
Junior
Sports Personality of the Year |
Jennifer
Miller
Ayrshire Flyers Speed Skating |
Jennifer
won the British Junior Open in Nottingham in December 2003
in the Junior 'E' category (under 11), in the process setting
two British records. She is an outstanding talent who has
the ability to go all the way in the sport. She is also
a figure skater, and this season won the Beginners level
in the Scottish Festival of Skating at Dumfries. |
Sports
Volunteer of the Year |
Kevin
Robson
Ayr North Sports Initiative |
Kevin
has been an active participant of the Ayr North Sports Initiative
right from the start, and at the age of 15 is the committee's
youngest member. He attends every meeting in his own time
and volunteers at every sporting event organised by ANSI,
committing nearly all of his spare time to the project.
He not only voices his opinion on behalf of the young people
within Ayr North, but he also has a say in decisions made
within ANSI. Kevin is also a keen sports person, organising
and leading teams within the football street-league and
actively encouraging other youths within Ayr North to participate
in the sporting activities offered by ANSI. He also finds
time to play in goal for a local team in which he is the
youngest member by a considerable number of years. |
Local
Service to Sport in 2003
and
SALSC Award
for Local Service to Sport
|
Dorothy
Carlyle
Figure Skating |
 |
George Morton, SALSC
Executive Member, presenting Dorothy Carlyle with
the SALSC and SASC Local Service to Sport Awards.
|
|
Dorothy
was a skater herself in the early sixties, skating out of
the old Ayr Ice Rink. She achieved inter-silver standard,
and later introduced her children to the sport. Her son
became Scottish Junior Champion. Dorothy worked tirelessly
for the local club, and in 1989 she became NISA test organiser
for Ayr Ice Rink. This involved arranging tests for skaters,
booking ice times, ensuring judges were available and arranging
hospitality for them. When Centrum opened, Dorothy added
it to the list of her responsibilities, and she now organises
local and regional tests at both locations. Her current
duties involve her in introducing youngsters to figure skating,
and development of ice sports in general. |
Coach
of the Year |
Kenny
Campbell
Ayr Seaforth Athletic Club |
Kenny
has an outstanding record as a sprints coach over the past
12 years. In 2003 he coached the following Scottish champions:
U17 man, Alan Wilson (60m indoor, 100m outdoor); U15 boy,
George Rodger (100/200m outdoor); U15 boy, David Hutt (100/200m
outdoor); and Senior man, Ian Kennedy, the SASC 2002 Sports
Personality of the Year. Recently in the West District Championships
at Meadowbank he coached the Senior, U21, U17, and U15 100m
winners. |
Sports
Team of the Year |
Ayrshire
Rolling Cougars Wheelchair Sports Club |
This
Ayrshire team attracts members from all over Scotland. Although
most had never played wheelchair basketball before, they
entered a team in the third division and gained promotion
to the second. On the weekend of 15/16th May 2004 they were
promoted to the first division. This is a marvellous achievement
and a tribute to their dedication to the sport. |
Sports
Personality |
Robert
Stevenson
Ayr Seaforth Athletic Club |
In
May 2003 Robert won the Scottish Masters 400m hurdles in
a time of 58.4 seconds, a British and European record. Due
to a leg injury he missed the European Masters Championships,
where he was favourite to win. Despite having his training
interrupted by this injury, he went to the World Masters
in Puerto Rico in June 2003, and became the 400m hurdles
50 age group World Masters Champion with a time of 59.8
seconds. |
